We often get asked whether you need to buy any of these brushes and the answer we give is that, whilst you can use a non Annie Sloan brush to paint your furniture, you will simply not get the best results without using the right tools. It’s therefore a great investment to purchase an Annie Sloan brush or two.

If you’re just setting out on your Annie Sloan journey then we would advise first of all giving some thought to the type of finish you are wishing to achieve. Annie Sloan paints are designed to be painted with texture and patina, it can be thickened by leaving the lid off or even popping it in the fridge for a couple of hours! This can help if you’re aiming to give your piece the ‘chippy’ look or that of years of layers of paint, even using different colours. Also you’ll need the paint fairly thick if you’re thinking about cracking it or distressing it. With this look we would advise purchasing an Annie Sloan Round Brush, which come in 3 sizes. If in doubt then always size up. A small one would be useful if you have detail to get in to but otherwise a medium is ideal for chests of drawers, tables, chairs etc and we’d recommend a large for bigger pieces such as welsh dressers or wardrobes. These brushes are excellent quality, made with 100% pure bristles, they also have split ends to the bristles which assist when trying to create texture. The split ends also mean the brushes hold lots of paint so one dip of the brush will cover a much larger area than a normal brush, making your life a lot easier. They are so much fun to use and allow you to paint expressively, with the range of finishes being endless, they really are invaluable. These brushes can also be used as wax brushes but we would advise not using the same brush to paint and wax.
The Annie Sloan brush range also consists of two Flat Brushes; a large and a small. These are perfect if you are wanting a flatter finish to your piece and are designed specifically to use with Chalk Paint®. They are shaped to hold a lot of paint and work brilliantly if you are looking to create a more modern, smooth finish. They have been designed to give an even finish and to eliminate brush strokes. For this look we would advise watering your paint down slightly for the second coat and if it has started to thicken up. Ideally you want it to be the consistency of single cream.
Lastly, in the range of brushes are the two wax brushes. We often get asked about applying waX and the best way to do this. The answer is that you can apply wax using a lint free cloth, a sponge, an Annie Sloan Round Brush or one of these specifically designed wax brushes. The advantage of these brushes is that the point is shaped rather than cut making use of the natural split end of the bristle, resulting in these brushes being the best performing and longest lasting wax brushes on the market. So they are certainly worth the investment and the ergonomic handles make working wax into paintwork easier than ever and the pointed end allows you to get the wax into intricate detailing and carving. The longer handle brush has been designed for large areas, whilst the short wax brush has been designed to get into awkward spaces with limited access. We tend to apply using one of these brushes then wipe off and buff using a cloth.
