Modern upholstery is more appropriate for post-
Traditional upholstery is appropriate for older chairs; from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and uses natural materials such as horsehair or coir (coconut) fibre, hessian or linen, and tacks for fixing, and employs sophisticated stitching techniques to make firm stitched edges. It is very labour intensive and involves real skill and takes years to truly master.
There are some excellent traditionally led upholstery schools out there, so what makes us different? We teach to a high end, replacing horse hair with foam and hammer and tacks with a staple gun and staples, we don’t compromise on quality and comfort or appearance and we believe that teaching in a modern way, whilst still retaining some of the traditional methods, enables even the most inexperienced of our students to go on to create amazing results that they can be very proud of.

Welcome to Ministry of Upholstery! We are the U.K.s leading modern upholstery school and the only stockist of Annie Sloan paints near the centre of Manchester. We operate from our 3,500 sq ft workshop conveniently based on the Manchester/ Salford border and we offer an extensive range of upholstery and painting courses to suit all levels of experience. As well as our courses, we are open to the public 7 days a week for sale of Annie Sloan paints and for expert advice on your upholstery and painting projects.
Our courses include our introductory Weekend Footstool Making Course, which combines both upholstery and Annie Sloan techniques, our six week Flexible Business Start Up Course and our Annie Sloan Painting Course. So whether you want to start a new hobby, tackle a one off piece of furniture to suit your home or embark upon a new career, then we will have a course to suit.

Our weekend taster session in modern upholstery is designed as an introduction to the craft. You can choose whether you upholster a footstool or a dressing table stool, learning about the tools and materials used as well as covering lots of techniques from webbing, applying Hessian and wadding, cutting fabric, corners and shallow buttoning.
